Easing Into Easter

Just the greatest piece of "religious" (I'd use the word, "spiritual") music ever, the Benedictus from Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis."

9324I believe I've probably attended a dozen live performances of the "Missa Solemnis", and during NONE of them did the violinist stand up as if performig a concerto. These days, or in Beethoven's time, a solo part for an instrument in an otherwise orchestral/choral piece is called an obbligato, and is usually played seating by the instrumentalist. BUT, on one occasion, on television, I satw a conductor arrange to have the brass stand up Tommy Dorsey-style during the coda of the last movement of Brahms's Second Symphony.
